In his book, Tribal Leadership, Dave Logan said “the culture of any [organizational] tribe is primarily defined by the shared language it uses”. Now, while he was referring to the tribal stages within an org, what clicked with me about this was how it could also explain why some Designers are more effective across organizational disciplines than others — they speak the language. Which Is why I believe “language fluency" over “technical skill” as the key to how Designers thrive as professionals long-term, as well as a more refined way to express our multifaceted value to the larger tribe.
